The Power of Play

Playful Learning

Playful Learning embraces the idea that students can learn through all types of play, but that students learn best when play is guided and learning goals are incorporated into the play environment.

Guided play can be realized in a planned play environment (classroom, children’s museum) or when adults follow children’s lead to support their learning. Guided play includes active, engaged, meaningful, socially interactive, and fun activities with a learning goal.

When educators engage in guided play, they enhance students’ exploration and learning through:

Co-playing with students

Asking open-ended questions

Suggesting ways to explore materials
